Information on Pesticide Rules

Mar 18, 2021

Prince Edward Island

The Province of PEI has rules governing pesticides applications at both the Provincial and Municipal level.  We explain these rules below and how they impact you as a Weed Man customer.

Municipal Rules

The municipalities of Charlottetown, Stratford, Cornwall and Summerside all have pesticide bylaws.  There are some differences in these bylaws, but what they all have in common is a “ban” against the use of most chemical or synthetic pesticides.  Under these municipal bylaws, commercial lawn care applicators like Weed Man are not allowed to apply pesticides to a lawn other than under certain exceptions.  Exceptions to the ban allow pesticides to be applied for agriculture, forestry, to golf courses, for structural pest control, and for invasive species.  Most importantly for you the homeowner, there is an exception for pesticide applications that use products on a list of “allowable pesticides”.  In other words, the municipalities allow the application of certain pesticides that are natural, organic, or considered lower risk.

Fiesta™

Fiesta™, the product that Weed Man uses to look after your lawn is on the “allowable pesticides” list.  Fiesta™ is an iron based, naturally occurring weed control product and is used for the treatment of weeds.  It is fast acting and kills common broadleaf weeds like dandelions, plantain and clover.   This product is considered safe to humans, pets and the environment.  If you’d like more information on this product, please contact our office.

Permits

If a severe insect infestation occurs, the municipalities allow a homeowner to apply for a permit to apply a chemical or synthetic pesticide to treat the insect infestation.  If your property suffers a severe infestation, one of our professionals will discuss options with you and, if it is determined that a permit is required, we will manage the paperwork for you.

Applicator’s License

Provincial rules require that anyone applying commercial pesticides to lawns is required to have an applicator’s license.  Applicators are required to have training in the use of pesticides and pass a provincially administered exam before being licensed.  Weed Man’s technicians are licensed applicators and have all required licenses to do their job.  If a pesticide requiring a permit is used, lawn care applicators like Weed Man are required to post a sign following the pesticide application and pre-notify all properties within 25 metres between 24 and 72 hours prior to application.

Integrated Pest Management

Summerside has an additional requirement in its municipal bylaw that all lawn care companies must be IPM accredited to do pesticide applications.  IPM stands for Integrated Pest Management and is a process that takes a preventative approach to controlling pests like weeds, insects and disease.  Weed Man is fully IPM accredited.
